What Is Wet Look Fabric?
Wet look fabric is a type of stretch textile — typically made from nylon and spandex — that has been specially finished or constructed to create the visual illusion of a water-drenched surface. When worn, it mimics the appearance of skin that has just emerged from water: glossy, fluid, and second-skin close. The effect is achieved through a combination of fabric composition, surface treatment, and — in the case of LOOKE GARMENT — hand-pleating and hand-draping techniques that no machine can replicate.
The Difference Between Mass-Produced and Handcrafted Wet Look
Most wet look garments on the market are made from coated synthetic fabrics — a thin layer of PVC or polyurethane applied to the surface of a base fabric to create a high-gloss finish. While effective, this method produces a rigid, uniform shine that looks the same on every garment and every body.
At LOOKE GARMENT, we take a fundamentally different approach. Our wet look effect is created through hand-pleating and hand-draping of a carefully selected stretch mesh fabric. Each pleat is individually formed by our artisans, creating a permanent wave-like texture that catches and reflects light differently depending on the angle, the movement, and the body wearing it. The result is not a coating — it is a construction. And because every piece is made by hand, no two garments are ever exactly alike.

What Is Wet Look Fabric Made From?
At LOOKE GARMENT, our wet look fabric is primarily composed of:
- 80% nylon (or recycled nylon) — provides the base structure, stretch, and the smooth surface that creates the wet appearance
- 20% spandex (elastane) — provides the four-way stretch that allows the fabric to move with the body without losing its shape
For our metallic wet look pieces — such as the Silver Moon Wetlook Midi Dress and the Metallic Gold Venus Wet Look Dress — we use a coated metallic mesh that adds a shimmering, reflective quality to the wet look effect.
Is Wet Look Fabric See-Through?
This is one of the most common questions we receive. The answer depends on the specific garment and its construction.
Our wet look fabric is semi-sheer — meaning it has a degree of transparency, particularly in areas where the fabric is stretched across the body. Most of our garments include lining, built-in shorts, or fully lined bodices to provide coverage where it matters most. We always specify in each product listing whether the garment is intentionally sheer, partially lined, or fully lined.
As a general rule: if you are concerned about transparency, we recommend wearing nude or seamless undergarments beneath any wet look piece. For sizing and fit guidance, visit our Size Guide.
How Do You Care for Wet Look Fabric?
Wet look fabric requires gentle care to maintain its appearance and longevity. For all LOOKE GARMENT wet look pieces, we recommend:
- Hand wash only in cold water
- Use a gentle, pH-neutral detergent
- Do not tumble dry — heat will damage the fabric's stretch and surface finish
- Hang to dry away from direct sunlight
- Do not iron directly on the fabric — if pressing is needed, use a cool iron with a cloth barrier
- Store hanging to preserve the drape and pleating

Why Choose Handcrafted Wet Look Over Fast Fashion Alternatives?
The wet look trend has been widely adopted by fast fashion brands — but the difference between a mass-produced wet look dress and a LOOKE GARMENT handcrafted piece is significant:
- Longevity — our hand-pleated construction is permanent and does not wash out or peel, unlike surface coatings
- Fit — every piece is made-to-order, ensuring a fit tailored to your measurements. See our Size Guide for details
- Uniqueness — because each piece is made by hand, no two are identical
- Sustainability — we use recycled nylon where possible and produce only what is ordered, eliminating overstock waste. Read more on our Sustainability page
- Craftsmanship — our artisans bring years of expertise to every pleat, drape, and seam. Learn more About Us
